One of the main principles of Scouting, all over the world, is service to others. Meals on Wheels Atlanta is a non-profit organization that serves low income and disabled seniors with weekly meals and more. The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year, so extra help is always needed with meal delivery. Director of Community Engagement, Jennifer Reid, reached out to Unit 367 in hopes that we would be able to answer the call for service, and we did.
On December 21, 2022 Second Class Scout Mek’Kai, Tiger Cub Scout Triston, and Juliette Daisy Scout Malayah helped to deliver two weeks’ worth of meals to eight seniors. In addition to receiving meals, everyone also received a holiday card from the unit. It was a good experience for both the scouts and the seniors.
The scouts were happy to deliver the meals and cards while cheerfully saying “Happy Holidays!” and the seniors were just as happy to receive them. Most of the seniors stated that it was refreshing to see the young scouts and receive a card as they don’t get many visitors. The main takeaway from this experience was that doing a good turn, even if it’s something as simple as giving a card, can brighten someone’s day and have a lasting impact.
